Personal Critique

As I mentioned in my Final Thoughts post from last night, as a general body of work, I am more proud of my photos last time. I felt like I actually worked harder this time, but last time I came away with more pictures that I think will be lifetime favorites. Perhaps I was trying too hard, which may be a lesson in itself. But having said all that, I am so grateful for the experience and I again feel like I stretched myself, learned a lot of new things, and came away a better photographer thanks to the challenge from Amy and Ashley who continually kept raising the bar. Here are my favorites:

Most Troublesome: Actually, there are several that I took this time that I felt put me in some form of "danger." Not being a big risk-taker, any kind of danger is signifigant, but the fact that I frequently have Drew with me and no one to watch him adds to my anxiety. For instance, we both faced charging dogs when I took the train tracks for Narrow (two pit-bull-looking dogs!) and a loud collie when I took Man at Work. Trying to keep Drew by my side and off the highway when I took Out of Place was a challenge, too. Taking Wooden was a personal achievement (Drew was asleep in the car, thank goodness) because I waded through about 15 yards of waist-high grasses to capture this shot. Having a severe phobia of snakes, which I felt sure were lurking in those grasses, really provided a sense of accomplishment when I got something usable.

Most Proud Capture: I am going to nominate Spirit for this category. As I said in my post, I love taking pictures of the flag. This was the last picture I took for this round and it was at the end of a very moving patriotic service (where I also took Front and Center). I knew I wanted to capture this flag and couldn't figure out the best way, until I started moving around it and actually got on the floor. The soaring ceiling provided a great backdrop and I felt like I had a good picture to submit.

Not As It Seems: I actually have another for the In the Background category that I am posting personally to Amy and Ashley's e-mails, but since it was not usable, this is the one I ended up with. Because of the car I drive, I am frequently looking over my shoulder at Drew because I really can't see him in my review mirror -- I had to take the headrest off the passenger seat to capture this photo.

Most Difficult to Capture: The car in Embellished was actually in someone's driveway remote Farmington. It's not the kind of place I really wanted to be walking all over taking pictures of personal possessions -- especially with Drew in tow. I passed it several times, before I ended up slowing down in the middle of the street and taking this out my window.

Most Creative: I will call this my most creative use of theme, since I really didn't have any terribly creative techinical pictures. With my weird sense of humor, I just loved this End picture. This was taken in Oglethorpe County and I pass it every time I go see my Dad. The Dead End sign is obviously literal, but I think the Night Time Rifle Range is hilarious. You can't say the Dead End didn't warn you.
The One That Got Away: Actually, it didn't...I just couldn't post it. I am sending it to Amy and Ashley for a good laugh.

Ok, Sarah! Here are my awards for you (haha):

Best Use of Theme: Little Things wins this one for me. I think you definitely captured the MOST little things in this picture (compared to Ashley and me)! An extremely close second for me is Embellished. WOW!!! And kudos for the effort of getting this shot as well. Another runner up for me is Steep. Having been to Pump It Up, I know just how difficult it is to get quality photos there, plus - GREAT IDEA!!! ;)

Best All Around Photograph: Hands down for me - Shoes. Ashley said it best when she alluded to the fact that it’s great when you can convey action with blur that looks intentional. Did that make sense? Anyway – this photo couldn’t be better. A close second for me is Innocent, mainly because I have a dark dog as well, and I do know how hard is it to get a decent picture of anything dark (especially a dog)!

Posting That Taught Me Something About You: Sarah and I have known each other for quite awhile now, so I feel I know her pretty well already! But Spirit has taught me about her love for photographing the flag. I know she loves patriotic colors and themes, but I never knew that she loved photographing the flag as much as she does. Very cool!

Picture I Envy the Most: Quality wise, again – Shoes. For all the same reasons as above – it’s just a superb photo!!! I’ve tried many times to get an “action” shot like this, but just can’t successfully achieve it. For subject, it’s Embellished. I just wish you could have gotten closer to get more detail. That car is just crazy!!! And overall, it’s Pair. Just like Comfort last time, I want this photo of Stella and Pat. You could have a real theme going in Drew’s room with those two shots!

Made Me Laugh the Most: Of course, it's End. TOO funny, Sarah. I laugh every time I look at that one. I love the double meaning!! What a fabulous find!

Honorable Mentions: So many good photos, and the ones mentioned above are definite favorites. Here are some others that really grabbed me: Structure (beautiful composition and color, not to mention a heart-warming picture), Lost and Found (the color on this is fabulous!!!), and Solitary (so many things are interesting and moving about this photo, and the quality is excellent).

Fabulous work, Sarah!!! I've truly enjoyed looking at each and every photo. Can't wait for another round!

Sarah -
You really took the scavenger hunt to the ultimate level. I think your photos are the most far flung and from the most different locations of any of ours. Great work on literally stretching your legs and finding some great shots!

Here are my favorites:

Best Use of Theme:
I loved Backside for this one. It was an unexpected look at Backside, and I loved the three classic cars lined up in a row.

I also love Solitary. The juxtaposition of the solemn graveyard and Drew walking amongst them was very moving. I felt reverent just looking at the photo.

Best All Around Photograph:
Argh. This is hard! It's a tie between Narrow and Innocent. Narrow is such a clean, simple photo, and I love the perspective. It's an evocative photo - it just feels...like anticipation?

And Innocent - I know how hard it is to photograph black animals (see my Annoying pic!), and I really admire the way you captured Abby. The details, like the little fine hairs on her muzzle and the curls of her ears are so beautifully captured.

Posting That Taught Me Something About You:
I think what I learned about you from several of your posts is that you're really observant. A lot of your photos are found - along the roadside or just things that you've seen before that you're looking at in a new way. I knew you were detail oriented, but the acute observation and "spotting" things was a new perspective.

Picture I Envy the Most:
Hmm. This a tie for me between Structure and Shoes. I think motion shots are incredibly tough. To get a blur that's artistic and well done instead of just a blur takes some skill, and I thought you really executed this well. And the composition is really awesome, too.

Structure is so delicate, and the lighting is so soft and pretty. If I didn't know better, I'd think you set this up, but to know it's a found photo makes it even better. It represented the category in such an interesting way, too.

Made Me Laugh the Most:
The marketer in me had to laugh at Out of Place! I'm such a staunch Diet Coke drinker that it made me chuckle to myself to see Pepsi upstaged! Great find!

A close second is Steep - how can you not join in the laughter with those looks of sheer delight!

Honorable Mentions:
I loved Little Things! I loved how the jars and the jelly beans just filled up the shot. It was a cool interpretation of the category to fill up the whole picture with little things. A lot of little things pack some power!

Also, I have to give you kudos for taking the best Embellish picture - I mean, who could top that subject?

Your fellow shutterbug,
Ashley
